Why did I see it: This was not suggested by a reader, but after seeing The Thomas Crown Affair for a previous installment of this column, and looking again Predator Recently for another assignment, I decided to dive into a full John McTiernan retrospective by reviewing Ultimate Action Hero for the first time in a couple of years. Although it was considered a huge failure in its day, it was notoriously opened a week later. Jurassic Park in 1993 and was completely defeated at the summer box office – retrospective audiences have raved about the film. There seems to be a growing consensus that it is an overlooked gem, rather than a disaster that got what it deserved.

I find that I like it more every time I visit it again. So let’s see what this review has in store for us …
